How it works

CTC (Cost to Company) is everything your employer spends on you — including money you never see monthly, like the employer's PF contribution, gratuity accrual, and insurance premiums. In-hand is what reaches your bank after deductions.

This calculator subtracts the three standard monthly deductions:

Income tax (TDS) is not included — it depends on your regime, deductions, and total income.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my in-hand salary less than CTC ÷ 12?

CTC bundles things you never receive as cash: the employer’s PF contribution, gratuity accrual (~4.81% of basic, payable only after 5 years), insurance premiums, and sometimes bonuses. In-hand is CTC minus all of that, minus your own deductions and tax.

Why is EPF capped at ₹3,000?

EPF applies to “wages” up to a ceiling of ₹25,000/month (raised from ₹15,000 effective 17 Sep 2026), and 12% of ₹25,000 is ₹3,000. Many companies cap the deduction there even if your basic is higher — though you can voluntarily contribute more.

When does ESI apply to me?

If your monthly wages are ₹21,000 or less (₹25,000 for persons with disabilities). The employee share is 0.75% and the employer pays 3.25%. Above the limit, ESI drops to zero.

Can I opt out of EPF?

Generally no, once you are a member. A first-time employee earning above ₹25,000 wages at the time of joining may opt out — but the decision is effectively one-time.

What is professional tax?

A state-level tax on employment, deducted monthly. Rates vary: Maharashtra charges ₹200/month, Karnataka has slabs, and some states levy nothing at all.

Is the employer’s PF contribution part of my in-hand?

No. It is part of CTC and goes straight to your PF account — it builds your retirement savings but never passes through your bank account.

Does this calculator include income tax (TDS)?

No. TDS depends on your tax regime, deductions (80C, HRA, etc.) and total income. Subtract your estimated monthly TDS separately, or use an income-tax calculator.

What about the gratuity shown in my CTC?

Many offer letters include gratuity accrual (~4.81% of basic) in CTC. It is only actually paid after 5 years of continuous service — it is not monthly income.

Why do two people with the same CTC take home different amounts?

Different basic-pay structures change EPF; state professional-tax slabs differ; ESI applies only below ₹21,000; and income-tax regime choices differ. Always compare the full salary breakup, not the CTC headline.

Should I negotiate on CTC or in-hand?

Negotiate the CTC, but evaluate offers on the breakup: a higher basic means higher PF and gratuity, while inflated “benefits” can make CTC look bigger than it feels. Ask HR for the monthly in-hand figure in writing.
