How it works

TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) means the payer deducts tax while making a payment and deposits it with the government on the payee's behalf. The payee gets full credit for it when filing their return — TDS is advance tax, not extra tax.

TDS = Payment amount × Section rate

Every section has a threshold (minimum payment) below which no TDS is deducted at all.

Frequently asked questions

What is TDS?

Tax Deducted at Source: the person making a payment (salary, rent, professional fees, interest) deducts a fixed percentage and deposits it with the government against the payee’s PAN. It is advance payment of the payee’s own tax.

What is the difference between TDS and TCS?

TDS is deducted by the payer (e.g. your employer, your bank). TCS (Tax Collected at Source) is collected by the seller on specified goods like motor vehicles, scrap, and foreign remittances.

How do I claim credit for TDS deducted on my income?

TDS appears in your Form 26AS and AIS on the income-tax portal. Claim the full credit while filing your ITR — it reduces the tax you owe, or comes back as a refund.

Will I get a refund if excess TDS was deducted?

Yes. If total TDS exceeds your actual tax liability, file your ITR and the excess is refunded to your bank account. No separate application is needed.

What are Form 15G and 15H?

Declarations you submit to avoid TDS on interest when your total income is below the taxable limit — 15G for individuals, 15H for senior citizens. Giving a false declaration is an offence.

What if the deductor cuts TDS but never deposits it?

Your credit can get stuck — always verify TDS in Form 26AS. The deductor faces interest (1–1.5% per month), penalties, and even prosecution for non-deposit.

What is the difference between TAN and PAN here?

The deductor needs a TAN (Tax Deduction Account Number) to deduct and deposit TDS. The deductee’s PAN is what the credit gets mapped to. One identifies the payer, the other the receiver.

What is the TDS rate if I don’t provide my PAN?

20% (or the normal rate, whichever is higher) under section 206AA. Always share your PAN with deductors.

Is TDS my final tax?

No. TDS is only advance tax collected through the year. Your final liability is computed when you file your ITR — you may owe more, or get a refund.

By when must TDS be deposited?

By the 7th of the following month (30th April for March deductions), with quarterly statements filed in Forms 24Q/26Q. Late deposit attracts interest.
